Administration Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.
“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.
An analysis argued that a funding lapse limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.
“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
