Anthony Barry Explains The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused supporting the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. The road from player to coach started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His club career led him to top European clubs, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours day and night, they both challenge limits. Their strategies feature player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for development is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those won over and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
