British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
