Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.
Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in recent months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
