Boxing is experiencing a significant decline this period, with a scarcity of big events and considerably fewer compelling bouts than usual. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the beleaguered business. The low-key appeal of the two boxers is strengthened by the fact that they now are on the cusp of a world title shot. Yet both are vulnerable. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, besides three setbacks, he has been sent to the canvas repeatedly by different opponents. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than anyone he has faced – with the exception of Wilder who appeared diminished of a power puncher when Parker achieved a dominant decision win in late 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20 years old, had no amateur experience and has consistently faced skepticism over his skill set. But he is equally near to a opportunity for the championship.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight class. These two guys have stepped up when neither one was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but he was injured. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to accelerate his path.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and his accomplishments and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the most important fight ever. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. This Saturday will be no different. The gap between where Joe is and what others believe about me has been a frequent topic during my entire career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a numerous contests on his resume. By no means is he an old man but he has been in the game for a significant time and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker is likely to be too seasoned, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the confidence that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
