Key US Panel to Decide on Changing Infant Hepatitis B Vaccine Recommendation
Following a delay and an unusually contentious meeting, a government vaccine expert group was set to cast ballots on Friday on whether to change the long-held guideline that each baby be inoculated against hepatitis B.
Intense Discussion and a Postponed Decision
The initial day of the meeting on Thursday was defined by heated debate over restricting access to the hepatitis B vaccine for babies and a choice to defer the vote by a day to give members more time to scrutinize the phrasing. The panel, which guides the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on vaccine use, had twice before postponed.
“Is there any definitive data of damage of giving this immunization before 30 days? Or is this theory?” inquired one adviser.
In response, another attendee stated, “There is limited evidence about the enduring danger.”
Existing Recommendations and Likely Ramifications
The vaccine is currently recommended for all infants within 24 hours of delivery to stop transmission of hepatitis B, which can lead to major damage to the liver. It has been provided to over a billion individuals for more than three decades.
The meeting in Atlanta offered no new evidence of harms caused by the vaccine. Specialists note any alteration to the present hepatitis B vaccination schedule could have major and extensive repercussions for childhood health in the United States.
Committee Makeup and Latest Shifts
The advisory panel can only provide advice to the director of the CDC. The group's roster has experienced alterations in recent days, with the declaration that the committee’s most recent chair would step down for an agency job and be substituted with a cardiologist who has been critical of other immunizations.
The panel includes a number of vaccination critics who are in agreement with a desire to overhaul – and potentially, in some cases, scrap – long-established immunization guidelines.
