A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified matters in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This wider security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport use to discussions practices.
