Meteorologists have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers have been urged to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely key.
