New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he holds significant backing.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this election is,” the mayor stated.

Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would decline the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
