New York's next mayor states he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain within me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
