The former Liverpool manager states a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that returning someday is an option. The 58-year-old, post a game-changing nine-season tenure featuring continental glory and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, has since taken on roles overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and providing guidance to Germany's league body.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title in the previous campaign, but many fans holding him in high esteem would welcome the notion that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he explained to his interviewer: “I stated I won't manage another team in England. Therefore in case it's my former club...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“Being 58, which suggests I could make the decision down the line, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch what lies ahead.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on what circumstances would have to unfold to bring him back to the touchline, he confessed he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I love what I do right now,” he commented. “No longing for management; I don’t miss standing during downpours for lengthy sessions; I'm glad to skip media briefings multiple times weekly or constant media duties each week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room per se, however, dining out with the team enjoying conversation, I appreciate that. With many victories so there was often positive atmosphere at the club. Remaining with me is Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh in my ear to illustrate.”
Commending Arne Slot
Klopp was full of praise of the current boss, crediting him due to the changes that won the league in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four in a row across various tournaments following significant transfers, but he rubbished the suggestion of it representing the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, they'll bounce back.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
The manager expressed deep feeling about the death of Jota, a player he signed in 2020, and the effect at the club. Jota lost his life in a road accident with his brother in July.
“Who can fill the void of a person like him? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. It's hard to picture the dressing room missing him. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A devastating blow for the entire squad also. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Coping with it on a personal level is not easy. Unbearable.”
