The ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Isla Mujeres, Mexico on the 20th of March.

A comprehensive search and rescue mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost boats loaded with aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Search Missions Launched

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and search planes to search for the missing boats, which were transporting at least nine total personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Mission

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the island.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Broader Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k operations called off in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified lately, with comments from various representatives emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous proposals, a prominent government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to find the vessels and guarantee the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
