UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
