Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit program wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
